Why returning from leave is harder than companies realise.

You come back to a team you barely recognise. Projects have moved on without you. Priorities have shifted. Your old confidence is wobbly. You’re managing childcare, recovery, or a new sense of self, on top of trying to be the same manager you were before.

Most returners get a welcome email and a coffee with their manager. That isn’t enough. The first six months back are when many returners decide whether to stay - and most of that decision is shaped by whether they feel supported.

What returning managers need.

They need someone outside the organisation who can help them think it through. Not their boss, who has stakes. Not HR, who has policy concerns. Not their partner, who’s living it with them. A thinking partner who can help them figure out who they want to be coming back, and what they need to ask for.

A human coach gives them somewhere to be honest - and figure out what’s next.

"I didn't have a clear goal for my coaching session with Niamh, just an ongoing uneasiness about an imminent transition in my life. Niamh was very insightful… she helped me to gain some clarity about what was bothering me and how I might address this and reframe this transition as something positive."

"She has been a fantastic support through lots of tough situations, from building confidence in new roles, to more personal, family situations. Speaking with Lisa has empowered me to navigate through different areas in a way that's not only authentic for me, but keeping my values at the forefront… Having this time has been invaluable for me in my successes over the past 12 months."

Every kind of leave can benefit from Coaching support. Managers feel considered and understood through the process and appreciate the investment that you're making to get their career back on track.

Maternity, paternity, and shared parental leave

Coming back to a team that moved on without you. Figuring out who you are now, at work and at home.

Adoption and surrogacy leave

A different path to parenthood with its own challenges. Work through any challenges and emotions with a Coach.

Long-term sick leave

Returning with a different relationship to your body, energy, and capacity. Rebuilding confidence gradually.

Sabbaticals and career breaks

When the break changed your perspective - and you’re not sure the old role still fits.

Carer’s leave

Returning after caring for a loved one. A different kind of emotional weight that needs support to rebuild confidence while navigating a whole host of emotions.

Return from bereavement leave

Grief doesn’t follow a schedule. A coach gives space to process what’s changed and what comes next.

The outcome: retention.

The first year back is the highest-risk year for losing returners. Companies that support that transition well keep their people, and gain leaders who come back with a clearer sense of what they want and how they want to lead.

Frequently asked questions.

Should returners start coaching before they come back, or after?
Both work. Some companies offer coaching from the last few weeks of leave, which can be especially valuable for the transition itself. Most start in the first month back. There’s no wrong answer; what matters is the support is there when they need it.
Is this specifically about maternity coaching?
We support all kinds of returners: maternity, paternity, shared parental, adoption, sick leave, sabbaticals, carer's leave, bereavement. Every Coaching conversation is unique to each returner's specific situation.
Can my partner or co-parent access this too?
Coaching access is per seat at the employer level. If both partners work at More Happi client organisations, both can access support.
What if a returner doesn’t want to return at all?
Coaching can support that decision too. Sometimes the most useful conversation is figuring out what someone actually wants, which might be to negotiate a different return, change roles, or leave well. Either way, the company benefits from the clarity.
How long do returners typically need coaching support?
It varies. Some use it intensively for the first three months back and then occasionally. Some keep using it for years. Because there’s no session limit, returners use as much or as little as they need.
